Silicon carbide for metallurgical applications is used in cast iron foundries for induction and cupola furnaces as a preconditioner to increase the levels of nucleation in the base iron and as alloying element replacing other sources of carbon and silicon.
Silicon carbide is also used in the steel making industry as deoxidizing and exothermic agent at ladle and BOF furnaces respectively.
